Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea's injury upon arrival

Grade Mare
1987?

Sweet Pea is a loving mare who came to us with a a terrible wound! She seemed to have impaled herself along the rib cage, then ripped a foot long, 3 inch deep gash down the length of her rib cage trying to free herself. Without proper care, the tissue quickly turned necrotic and the injury became life threatening.

SCR gives special thanks to our vet, Peter Conserva, for rushing out to meet us in hopes that he could help Sweet Pea. He did an emergency "field surgery" of sorts, ripping out the "home made stich job", cleaning the injury, inserting drains and restitching.

Sweet Pea, after months of post surgical care, healed up nicely, with only a "smiley face" scar on her side. Turns out she is a doll under saddle, though she can be a bit "girthy" when putting the saddle on.
